The Grammar SCHOOL at KCCS
The Grammar School runs from Grade 1 through 6. Emphasis is placed on building the foundation for the intellectual skills that students will learn during their time at KCCS. Much is taught through imitation and memorization, often through songs and chants. Students will also be given numerous opportunities to begin learning good rhetorical expression even at this early stage.
Each day will begin with Bible reading, hymn singing, catechism songs, and a time of prayer together. Children will do daily memory work and recitation, with text selections from the Bible and other great literary works (e.g. poetry relevant to the curriculum in other subject areas), furnishing the soul with a growing moral imagination.
Curriculum Overview
reading, writing, and spelling
Grammar school students continue their multisensory phonics program (All About Reading, Levels 2-4), increasing the phonogram and sightword base. Younger students will expand their vocabulary through understanding homophones, synonyms and antonyms. Every student is taught to make predictions, compare and contrast main characters, and make inferences from the text. Older students will explore personification, acronyms, and hyperbole. They will learn to discuss conflict and character transformation, as well as how to summarize the text. Upon completion of the phonics program, students will begin studies in literature, learning how to apply skills in reading comprehension and critique.
Literature plays an integral role in learning, and the child’s natural love for stories is fostered as students read and listen to a wide selection of great books. Many reading selections are intentionally connected to the history topics being studied.
Formal spelling will begin with students learning encoding skills, reliable spelling rules, and multisensory strategies for spelling. Proper penmanship will continue to be practiced using Zaner-Bloser Handwriting.
Students learn grammar and writing through imitation, at first copying out properly written sentences from great works of literature, and later learning to model their own writing with the same style and genre. They will be taught the basic structure of the sentence and punctuation, and practice them regularly. Our grammar and writing program makes use of Classical Academic Press’ incredible curriculum, Well Ordered Language (Levels 1-4) and Writing and Rhetoric (Books 1-12)
history and geography
Students will begin the chronological study of History, using Story of the World, a curriculum that brings to life the people, discoveries, conflicts, and stories that shaped human history. They will complete a 4-year cycle studying the Ancients, the Middle Ages, Early Modern History, and Modern times. Early in the grammar stage students compose a narration of the events studied and create a picture to bring these stories to life. As students progress they are encouraged to compose summaries and through discussion to make assessments about historical events.
Basic geography commences with map work that is designed to show students that history happens, not in a vacuum, but in real places in our world!
arithmetic
Students will continue to be introduced to key mathematical concepts using concrete examples and pictures. They will then be led progressively and logically to understand the abstract concepts using Singapore Math. Mental math strategies are taught and practised regularly, and use of the calculator is not employed until students enter the Logic school. A heavy emphasis is placed on learning to solve word problems so that students learn to “read” math as is it is found in our world.
latin
Students will memorize vocabulary through songs, games, pictures, and flashcards using Song School Latin. They will begin to read and write Latin words with assistance. Upper Grammar school students will begin formal Latin grammar with Latin for Children, studying declensions and conjugations, and learning basic translation.
science
Students of the Grammar school are taught about basic biology, chemistry, and physics through Apologia Science: Exploring God’s Creation. Hands-on experimentation, supplemental outside reading, and narration pages will be used to encourage interest in science and to guide children into discovery of the complex, ordered and wonderful world that God has made.
fine arts
Children’s souls are nourished when God’s truth, beauty, and goodness are revealed through instruction in music and the visual arts. Students will learn about the work and lives of well-known artists and composers, and will be taught to imitate and enjoy these great works, employing creative expression through individual and group endeavours.
physical education
Students are taught wisdom, courage, justice, and temperance through playing team sports, running, and other exercises. We will emphasize both physical and cognitive growth by focusing on the rules, training methods, and specific skills for a wide range of sports.
